Susie Dent of Countdown's "Dictionary Corner" is coming to Folkestone as part of Folkestone Literary Festival 2008. At least I hope it's the same Susie Dent. We watch Countdown every day on 40D, so this will be nice.
She has a regular publication called The Language Report, plus really squillions of other books. Would it be bad form for me to pick up some bargains from ABE and take them to get signed, rather than paying the full Waterstones RRP on the day? A signed Susie Dent is not going to instantly quintuple it's money like last week's Terry Pratchett did but they're nice to have anyway.
I've still not actually read the Roy Hattersley or Terry Jones books that I picked up last year, however I have nearly finished The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: or the Murder at Road Hill House (my impulse buy from our last trip to Canterbury, even cheaper now on Amazon, or there's a signed first edition for £45). I'm only a few pages away from also by the the same author, but I think there is still more to be revealed... It's been an interesting sort of book, an in depth study of a big important murder case that inspired the likes of Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It's a bit dry in places, and occasionally it feels like things were revealed in the wrong order - it is not a novel - but I'm sure things will come good. It won the BBC4 Samuel Johnson prize you know.

BBC 2 tonight, "The Strange Case of Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle", a one off (I think) drama about the birth and death of Sherlock Holmes. Looks good to me, though Radio Times says it's a "slow-moving, vaguely supernatural essay". Coincidentally (or is it a PR stunt?) there are plans afoot to exhume bodies over the suspicion that Conan Doyle had someone MURDERED to cover up the fact that he'd stolen "Hound of the Baskervilles"! I read it in this morning's paper, can't find much online yet just this in the Glasgow Herald (not Folkestone Herald).
Today's commute in was rubbish, two annoying blokes sat behind us talking loud crap all the way in. SHUT UP! Or go sit in another carriage! When Folkestone Gerald goes paper I will write an editorial on this, oh yes, extreme measures...
Happy Birthday Clare! And me! It's both our birthdays today! No plans, what with getting up early and going to bed early, we'll be saving the celebrations for the weekend.
Didn't bring a lunch today, haven't enjoyed my home made dinners so much this week, so I will trudge up to Chap A Nash in the rain in a bit.

Had a GREAT Christmas break in Folkestone, quite a lot of sitting in and relaxing, playing dominoes, watching DVDs (lots of series one, why did Doyle leave? He's WHAT???) and remarkably not eating out once. Normally a trip there means restaurants for every meal, but we managed ten days or so feeding ourselves mostly healthy food. Christmas dinner was a success, the first we cooked ourselves with some help from Deano in the meat department. A fairly dull cashew roast for me, but all the trimmings made up.
Normally I would recount all our nights out here, but I can't remember exactly what we did on each night. Christmas Eve, I expect we went to to Chambers, and we did again on Christmas day night. Not been out on xmas night before, but it was ace. Free drinks all over the place and a big quiz, with many prizes, that we completely failed to win. New years eve was a bit of a wash out in Folkestone, the aforementioned pub cancelled their NYE party at very short notice so we went to La Vue and it wasn't very good... I kid myself that Folkestone is the super cosmopolis already, but it's still getting there, very much provincial winebar feeling and not worth the 15 quid entry fee... I guess it had been set to keep out the riff raff, but it made it too quiet.
Not thrilled to be back in London, but three months today the lease is up and we're heading to Folkestone and commuting... a travelcard to reach that far is going to be about 330 quid a month, each, ouch, we'll see how we get on with that. Still trying to figure out the best trains to get in, Clare needs to be at work before me, so hopefully there's a clever change-at-Ashford or direct to Cannon Street or something that means not having to leave before 7am.
The Flat is coming along nicely, we got ourselves a table from Laura Ashley with vouchers we received as christmas presents, our new blinds are being fitted the day after tomorrow, and coffee table chest thing should be arriving soon.
Few more things, got a great book More tales from the taproom, a revision of Tales from the taproom by Martin Easdown and Eamonn Rooney that is long out of print... It's a history of the pubs of Folkestone, and it's great. Also read Exile's return in just a couple of days, very good. The book, and my reading skills, I have a certificate you know. Also great, we went to The Goods Shed in Canterbury, a farmers market by the West station, ace, will return.
On a less great note, the tsunami. You can give money here.
