Crash? What crash?

Recommended / related

I hung on for years and years wary of buying convinced there would be a crash. If I'd bought when I first could, even if there had been a crash I'd be better off than I am now. If I'd bought at the very top of the market just before the last crash, I'd still be better off than I am now. I think I bought at the very top of the market for Folkestone this time round, and I'm not sure our flat has gone up in value much in the three years since we bought it (though my bro-in-law's bungalow has been valued at 25% higher than they paid for it). I can see there being a serious levelling out in some areas, but not everywhere. I probably wouldn't buy a flat as an investment round here right now, as I know there are going to be lots more built, which ought to keep the price down, but buying a property that you will actually want to live in is less risky. There were a couple of "blocks" of very nice looking new flats in the centre of town that were just being finished when we moved in, more expensive than ours, and a bit smaller I think, and one or more of them is always listed in the local paper as being up for sale or rent. Things like that being available stop the value of comparable flats rising, but if we can get the sort of rental value they do we'll be fine.

We could sell this flat and use the equity in it towards the next place, but part of that would get swallowed up by fees and things anyway, and I do love this flat and want to keep living in it for now anyway, and basically we need to either stay here or rent it out with the pool table in situ, as we're unlikely to move to another place with rooms big enough...

Sales pitch, in case someone comes across this in a couple of years time looking for a , near the station, near the town, glimpse of the sea, 17' x 15' lounge, 17' x 16' bedroom, 11'6'' square kitchen / breakfast, with a nearly 11' high celing, big bathroom, double glazed, central heating, a very cool remote controlled fireplace that I don't think I can take with me, a couple of humungous walk in storage cupboards that are crying out to be turned into en-suites, I mean I could go on... It's not available yet though. One day.

Car, yes, I want to get a van, but the wife is not keen. The new job is right by Folkestone races / Westenhanger station (three stops away) and we're right by the station, so I have no excuse for adding to the air pollution just yet.

Weddingtastic weekender

Might mighty wedding fun at the weekend, but I'm KNACKERED now... Headed back in to London Saturday morning for the wedding of Ralph and Linda at The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA for short), just off The Strand, and very nice it was too. The ceremony and the reception were both in fabulous vaults underneath the building, and the wedding breakfast (that it was what you call the post ceremony meal isn't it?) was in a rather grand room upstairs.

I was an usher, and got me a new shirt and tie in celebration of this. Maybe leaving this purchase until the morning of thew wedding was a bit sloppy but I just about got away with it. I thought it was nice, but just retro sought some fashion advice from a chum:

...the fashion police might pull you over. I also did hear that the pink thing for blokes is long dead and guys should stop doing it...

Hmm, cheers, this is my ten-yearly shirt and tie purchase, I've got to make it last now... I thought everyone looked great, got some snaps of the wedding here, not all as flattering as they might be, and disappointingly few good ones of the bride and groom themselves, doh!

The food was fab, I had a special menu of some sort of pea soup, far too tasty to be just pea, though they tell me it was vegan. The main was a wild mushroom risotto, set off with some roasted tomatoes. Tonnes of vino-collapso and champagne too, that's why I look like I do in some of the pics. Much fun, more drinking, then a cheeky real ale nightcap in next door and back to .

Journey home the next day wasn't such fun, engineering works meant a bus from to home, but it could have been a lot worse. Good to see different bits of the outskirts of Folkestone on the magical mystery tour that took us through and , but it was super foggy so didn't get too much of a butchers. Got home, phoned mum, visited mum-in-law, ate chilli pie and rested briefly, before the alarm woke us for work again.

Caution, may contain traces of nuts: BBC has picked up the squirrel eating story from the other day, so's everyone, no, stop this! My nephews will eat very little except chicken, yorkshires, and dessert, so I fail to see a nation of kids being turned onto squirrel cutlets just yet.

PS got any Pokemon cards? I'm after an Ancient Mew, an Articuno, and a Togepi, to replace some that a nephew had stolen at school...

"When the rest of the track is finished in 2007 it will be possible to commute from St Pancras to Folkestone in 35 minutes"

That sounds a bit quicker than I'd heard before, but so says propertyinvesting.net... it also adds:

Folkestone is a nice town generally – no really bad areas. Down by the harbour it’s got "further to go" than other parts of the town. Much of Folkestone is large elegant Victoriana – three story terraces many in leafy avenues. Any property with sea-views will command a premium in future years... Close to the town centre is a plus if you rent your property. There is no University*, but there is a town centre International Language College that needs student accommodation. Price are rising fast – from last October, so get in quick before it's too late!

What a nice report!

*and surely there will be a uni of some description soon enough!
