sandgate in people, prose and poems
Feb 8This Wednesday (10th) sees the compilation I have put together called Sandgate in People, Prose and Poems at the Chichester Memorial Hall. It starts at 7:30 and consists of three voices. As well as mine there are Sue Blakesley and Ken Colley. There has always been a chance that Ken would be called away for filming but it's looking pretty certain that he'll be there. Ken played Admiral Piett in two Star Wars films and recently played the Duke of Edinburgh in one of Chanel 4's The Queen series. Sue is a graduate from the Folkestone University Drama Degree Course so I'm working with a great team (I'm not trained but I once said hello to Kenneth Moore outside the Odeon cinema in Folkestone!).
As well as the old favourites associated with Sandgate I hope I have found some less known facts - what, for example, has the Hudson Guild Theatre in New York got to do with Sandgate? Following a brief introduction, the evening starts with a short audio video.

More Tales From The Tap Room
Jan 29Been looking for an original of More Tales From The Tap Room for ages, ie Tales From The Tap Room, but no joy. I have this book but would like a first edition. Get this one here and help Pilgrims Hospice, or you buy a new copy from Folkestone library.
More Tales from the Tap Room by Martin Easdown and Eamonn Rooney. A history of the Public Houses and Breweries of Folkestone, Sandgate, Cheriton, Seabrook, Shorncliffe, Morehall and Newington. P/B 232 pages with photographs and illustrations. Published 2004.
Brilliant book btw.
Speaking of the library, please install my folkestone library greasemonky plugin - each time you view a book on amazon it will tell you if the book is available (for free) in the local libraries.

***LUCY KITT***
...Lucy is a young singer- songwriter from the UK, creating a buzz with her fresh and exciting approach to the folk rock sound. Writing with a style that evoke's some of the great female singer songwriter's of the 70's, her songs are inspired by honesty, passion's and truth's from experiences along the way. Her self- penned, and soulful songs continue to connect with audiences through their heartfelt and confessional lyrics. It is rare to see so many influences crammed into music, and lucys songs span the wide spectrum of folk, grunge and blues, with a distinct twist of her own individual style people find difficult to pigeon hole....
***SYD ARTHUR***
...Syd Arthur are an exciting new band from the South East of the country, at the forefront of the young musical explorers whose unique sound has been making waves far beyond their native Canterbury. Their highly eclectic sound encompasses folk, world, psychedelic, jazz, prog and rock music, showcasing original song writing, inter-weaved with instrumental freak-outs...Back by popular demand...
***VIBE MACHINE***
...Blending the traditional funk and jazz sounds of fender rhodes, double bass and drum kit Vibe Machine set out their beats and grooves to back the voice and message of Dave Pepper (bard of albion and lord of the mic). Dave has been a regular and popular performer at festivals around the country over the last few years. The group formed in 2009 and then played throughout the summer in many locations including Lovebox, Small World festival, Passing Clouds, The Vibe Bar (brick lane), Making Waves festival and also forming the backline of the house band for YouNite! at The Others in Stokey. Drawing on a wide range of influences VibeMachine are pleased to present their Know Folk Funk Punk Poetry for your listening pleasure...
***DJ MR BLUE***
...MR BLUE'S highly eclectic taste in ass kickin tunes once again round off a superb line-up. He'll be sexing it up and generally being quite naughty from around 11 till heaven...
Under 18s are welcome. A strict over 18 only alcohol policy is in operation
There is a full bar downstairs in the venue and upstairs a great restaurant and bar which you can see more of on their website.....
http://www.theviewfolkestone.co.uk/
Basically The Bar Below is one of the most relaxing, well laid out places I’ve ever come across. It is rapidly gaining renown as a truely unique venue having held some fantastic music events already such as 'Underground Sound' and 'The Loco Lounge', to name but a few. The acoustics are great the lighting fantastic and the staff friendly and helpful, there’s even a STAIR CHAIR for those who find stairs difficult. It's also decked out with nice comfy sofas (see pics) for those wishing to take the weight off their feet !
Please if you can, help by forwarding this email on to interested parties
If you need bigger jpegs then please contact me and i'll arrange it
Hope you’re all well, see you there and please bring your freinds.

Jan 22Karl's Good Food, 43 St Peter's Street, Canterbury, Kent CT1 2BG, Telephone: 01227 764 380
On the tasting table this weekend.....
Reds
2005 Gaia, Grosset, Clare Valley: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend produced from the highest vineyard in Clare Valley, at an altitude of 570 Metres. And it shows, such is the freshness and purity of the fruit. A wine of such ripeness yet restraint, finesse and exuberance; a style seldom seen in Australia. A monumental wine from ones of the worlds best producers - GBP27.50
2007 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Boisset: Beautiful example of Burgundian Ponot Noir and particularly of the 2007 vintage. Fresh lush strawberry fruit and floral undertones with a classic hint of wild mushrooms. This is one for drinking now and 20 minutes or so in the fridge brings out the youthful and vibrant fruits even more - GBP12.95
Whites
2009 Margaret River White, Cullen, Western Australia: Vanya Cullen believes that great wines are made in the vineyard, hence the conversion of her vines to organic status. This fragrant, zippy blend of Sauvignon, Semillon, Chardonnay and Verdelho is delicious by itself or with a bowl of mussels - GBP12.95
2008 Marlborough Classic Riesling, Framingham, New Zealand: Entising white from Marlborough. Bouquet of perfumed, floral aromatics of jasmine and honeysuckle greets you, while the palate offers flavours of lime and orange citrus, stonefruit and mineral. The residual sugar in the wine is balanced with a backbone of firm, natural acidity giving a long, dry finish. Excellent with curries and fusion food - GBP11.95
Pop into the shop this weekend and sample these delicions wines and receive a 10% discount on any purchases

AMERICAN INDIAN DANCE AND HISTORY COMPANY ON SCHOOL TOUR
Jan 20American West is an Internationally acclaimed team of artistes, admired for their superb demonstrations of Native American dances, games, music and talks upon Native American history. They have been working within education for the past twenty five years and are now based permanently in Boston UK.
Travelling throughout Europe they have appeared on stage, radio, television and in schools, demonstrating and recreating Native American music, dance, history, crafts and customs for both education and cabaret. In just one year alone they starred on 14 television and 7 radio programs in England, Spain, France and Holland including GMTV, BBC, ITV, S4C, Granada,Central and Anglia
Two principal members of American West and their two children are visiting schools in your area during 2010 in full native regalia, and spending two hours in a morning or afternoon in school. Arrangements can always be made for a whole day visit tailor made to suit your requirements. The performance is designed to fit in with the National Curriculum at all ages from 5 years to SHP GCSE American West.
The artistes are professional full time historians, dancers and singers, covering both ladies and mens dance styles and music from the early 1800's to modern day and also native history from pre-Columbus to the early 1900's.
On a history day they will refer to native life before the whites arrived, Native social and domestic structure, the tipi and wigwam, civil rights, reasons for the conflict between Native and White, and the Battle of Little Big Horn.
On a dance day they will perform many of the native dances, games and songs and will also arrange for all students to participate in the dances. There will be much opportunity for hands on experience for the students to handle and wear the regalia, to play traditional games and to try old style Lakota sign language. The pace of the performance is fast and energetic, many items are up to 140 years old,the music is live, and the students are often taught a traditional song too.
In many schools students are taught traditional dances and then take part in a performance at the end of day before an audience of parents and pupils.

I'll show you the regeneration of Folkestone RIGHT HERE!
Jan 19Never mind your creative quarter and your ASDA and all that, look whose front door was open today! This is evidence of the regeneration of Folkestone.
I don't remember seeing it in the masterplan, but I think that's all out the window now. So who is working on [[]]The Elizabethan, and what are they doing? Flats? Offices? Or an actual new place to go in Folkestone?
I say "legendary" Folkestone venue, maybe it's just me who is obsessed with it. I have lived here for about six years and never seen it open, what a treat to have a peek inside.
I did not dare actually go in, but if you ever did (this person did does that still look about the same? Reminds me of a Beefeater or something.
I'm off to Legends of Folkestone with this one.

RE: I'll show you the regeneration of Folkestone RIGHT HERE!
I think it has been closed about 30/40 years late 70s early 80s, I did go there once many years ago and it was very much like a Beefeater before Beefeaters, I am surprised after all these years that it is in such good condition. I cannot recall why it closed, I think it was a reasonably popular place. Would be interested to see if there are any menus remaining, I imagine a three course meal was about GBP2,50, wine about GBP1 a bottle and beer less than 50p and the average Folkestone weekly wage about GBP30
Richard :: Tue 19 Jan 19:58 2010 :: Comment / reply
Yep have had other comments to back that up
Someone reports it being closed when they lived here in 1985, but was visited by someone else in the 1970s in this thread about the Mayfield Suite... I like to think there are still prawn cocktails and blackforest gateaux half eaten on plates on the tables.

Jan 11Starbucks, Stop24 Services and Port Early Arrivals, Junction 11 M20, Stanford Intersection, Stanford, Kent CT21 4BL
Some of the staff are moving to Folkestone Starbucks, but some are being made redundant. Guess they can't have been there long enough for that to actually mean anything though.
UPDATE: Might actually be the 24th that it closes, so that's an extra week of caffeine based fun and overpriced snacks.

Closing down sale next weekend at The Neville Pundole Gallery
Jan 10The Neville Pundole Gallery, 39 Tontine Street, Folkestone CT20 1JT, Telephone: 01303 223029 or 07860 278774
I didn't know Bar Vasa were moving out of the Cheesegrater, I don't get out much these days... the only times I have been there there was no-one in there, but then Tontine Street is still a bit of a stretch to picture as an ideal spot for a sophisticated evening. The "creative quarter" of Folkestone does seem to have stalled a bit doesn't it. Damn recession!
Having traded in Antiques and Fine & Applied Art for over 20 years and after running a Gallery in Canterbury in a good position near The Marlowe Theatre for ten years with wide experience of fine, collectable and quality items; a good cohort of willing staff and substantial stock, I was thinking of opening a second gallery in Margate's Old Town. Sadly, as predicted, the Turner Contemporary project in Margate stalled. Having heard of the regeneration of the Folkestone I investigated and was so drawn by the town with its various and interesting architecture; its unique light, sense of space and fine views I sold up in Canterbury and moved here.
I was excited by the chance of opening a much smaller Gallery within the Creative Quarter. I took a shop in The Old High Street for a few months as a tenant of the Creative Foundation but regret the decision for multiple reasons which included the high rent which was almost twice that per useable sq.ft. of my previous Gallery in Canterbury and it proved to be unfit for retail purpose. Still keen to continue trading in the Creative Quarter I took a much larger shop from a sensible commercial landlord at a rent which is a mere fraction of that charged by the Creative Foundation, a registered charity.
Sadly footfall has only increased, if at all, minimally and I have decided while continuing my business not to have premises.
During the past 27 months I have hosted around 17 exhibitions of which many proved successful and while I invited trustees, directors and staff of the Creative Foundation they have noticeably been absent.
I held an Art Exhibition in conjunction with Canterbury College and the Kent & Medway NHS Trust and while its Chief Executive drove from Maidstone to attend there was no support from the CF.
There was no representation from the CF at an exhibition of work by students from Arc 25, here in Tontine Street though I gather the organiser personally invited the then Chief Executive.
The CF has failed to retain the excellent Bar Vasa at the Quarterhouse, Wild for Flowers, one of their earliest supporters and Moda an award winning gift shop.
A director of the CF which employs only a few dozen people earns more than the chief Executive of Oxfam employing 6,000 people and is also a Trustee supervising his own job.
(see charity-commission.gov.uk)
While I continue to support what I see as the aims of this regeneration I cannot continue to trade here.
My next Exhibition will be on 27th & 28th March 2010 at The Grand on The Leas Folkestone
The Neville Pundole Gallery presently at 39 Tontine Street Folkestone Kent CT20 1JT
