- 2000 The Beta Band @ Astoria (Tue 25 Jan 2000)
NME Brats show, lovely write up: [quote]Flash forward a few years to the Beta Band in January 2000, at an NME Brats show. I don't really remember much, other than that I was with a big group of my gigging mates in the upstairs bit, we were all trolleyed o

Got in free because of the support, think it was Ben and Jason. Not much copy anyway.

Plus ...Trail Of Dead, awesome. There was another Trail of Dead show just days before this, not sure it's the Highbury Garage show I'm thinking of buy maybe.
[leave a comment]- Sex By Seven6x7's gig last night at the Astoria was FAN BLUDDY TASTIC! They use many layers of guitar based noise to create an amazing aural experience. Also they have an ace lights / lazer show, managing to pull it off without coming over all Pink Floyd, Mrs. The support - ...AYWKOBTTOD - seemed to start the gig a lot more neat and orderly than their last show, but a few changarounds and the magical chaos was back. Just as things warmed up, and they startet to REALLY get metal, the singer/drummer/guitari - admin

Free instore gig and poetry reading...
[leave a comment]- Free Jacques GigJacques are playing a free set tonight at Borders Bookshop tonight, 6.30pm, at the Oxford St Store... If you check out Borders website (follow the link) don't bother calling their information line, it gets about halfway through (up to the 10th of June or so) before cutting off and starting again... Anyway, if you're going, see you there... but you won't see me, you don't know what I look like. - admin
- 2000 Graham Coxon @ The Garage (Fri 14 Jul 2000)
Excellent, good to see his Blur bandmates turning out to cheer him on the audience too, Damon was pogoing away like a goodun
[leave a comment]- Where did all my money go?While I was enjoying myself at Graham Coxon's GRATE (but very metal) gig on Friday night, the computer that controls all things was doing a bit of house keeping, and deleting money that had been credited to accounts accidentally over the past wee... You may have seen the complaints about this on the bulletin boards... What should we do about the money that was taken? Click here to have your say... - Admin
- 2000 Coldplay @ Barfly (Tue 1 Aug 2000)
Coldplay Barfly session was today, I was there... cosy.
[leave a comment]- Free Coldplay GigChannelfly are EXPANDING into TV with a series of live sessions, to go out on Channel Four, starting August 23rd. The first show to be recorded is Coldplay, in their first small gig since their major chart success - see www.channelfly.com for how to get tickets (you have to send them an SAE, we'll let them give the address)... Other PopEx faves being filmed for the Barfly sessions include Badly Drawn Boy, Muse, JJ72, Delgados, Doves, Clinic, and Babybird... In a bit of a FIRST for popEx, - Admin
- Coldplay at Barfly yesterdayColdplay yesterday were GRATE, and also the singer is just like Gaz Top, off TV. They did half a dozen songs at the Barfly (Camden Monarch), in a special, that's going out on Channel Four next month, as already mentioned lots of times... I made a note of the setlist, so I could do a professional review like, but I left it at home. They played Shiver, and Yellow, they did one song twice, I think it's called Trouble, so I guess that's going to be the next single. Anyway, the whole air of the gig w - Admin
- 2000 King Adora @ Barfly (Wed 2 Aug 2000)
Another "Barfly Sessions" TV thing, free and in the afternoon I think. Pretty poor.
[leave a comment]- King Adora @ the BarflyKing Adora played another of Channelfly's "going to be on the TV soon" gigs yesterday. The music is good, lots of power and energy, but there are tinges of something like Gay Dad about them - they definitely give the impression of being a band put together by journalists and art student prankers, even though this isn't the case. It's nice to see a band making an effort to give rock and roll a kick up the arse, even if they're lifting largely from early Manics / New York Dolls / Guns n Roses s - Admin
- 2000 Badly Drawn Boy @ Barfly (Wed 2 Aug 2000)
Another Barfly Sessions, evening or just later afternoon this one.
[leave a comment]- Badly Dressed Boy @ Camden Bar FlyBadly Drawn Boy last night were absolutely ace - that Damon Gough is funny as you like, a natural entertainer, a talented frontman, and the hairy offspring of Peter Kaye and George Dawes. The set was a fantastic shambles, which is pretty much how I remember it from Glastonbury - is it accident or design? Whatever, it was music as it should be, fun, seemingly effortless. Much as the robo camera stole the show at the Coldplay gig the day before, the ad-libbing keyboard should get it's own reco - Admin

[leave a comment] - 2000 The Cuban Boys @ The Garage (Tue 8 Aug 2000)
Don't recall if they did their "Hamster Dance" single, I do remember an ace cover of "Self Esteem", though I could possiblybe mixing it up with an earlier Helen Love gig... Plus The Fighting Cocks.
[leave a comment]- Cuban CocksEveryone's favourite one hit wonders the Cuban Boys are doing a gig with the Fighting Cocks at Highbury Garage on the 8th of August (not the 4th as previously reported), and it will be GRATE... The Fighting Cocks played last night, and were ace, this is one not to miss. - admin
- 2000 Bloodhound Gang @ Astoria (Wed 16 Aug 2000)
They did a 10 kebab challenge on stage and Daphne and Celeste were there. And so was I!
[leave a comment]- Hooray For Boobies, possiblyThe law of diminishing returns was in FULL EFFECT last night at the Bloodhound Gang's Astoria show... a member of the audience was challenged with eating a big bag of kebabs, for the chance to win $100... At the start, the guy must have been thinking "Easy! I love kebabs, I could just eat them again and again", and that's how I was before the gig - I loved them and was really looking forward to the show, but I'm not sure if I'll go back for another portion. The songs were good, the place was p -

- Help The AgedWhat is going on with Pulp and their older material? Last night's show was Very Exciting, but a few songs were missed... They opened with one that I think is a new one, it goes "rent a flat and cut your hair, get a job and I'll have a rum and coke" or something, anyway, it was GRATE, and I'm sure it's going to be a big hit. Then they threw in some REALLY new songs, all of which sounded more like classic Pulp, and which promise excellent things for the new album. "Help the Aged", "A little - Admin
- 2000 Green Day @ Kings College (Fri 15 Sep 2000)
Some special Radio One thing, got a nice freebie from friends I was about to start working with at Channelfly. Green Day picked some kids out of the audience and made them play a song.

It is a good rule, but not as good as my new rule which is "always carry a screwdriver"; I got to the venue, went to the bog, slammed the cubicle door, and then realised there was no handle, so I couldn't get out... [leave a comment]- Cooper Temple Clause @ The Water RatsLet's start on a downer: Their name, it is RUBBISH. There are SIX of them, that is rubbish. They are look like an indie boyband, that is rubbish. One of them (guitarist Tom Bellamy) was playing whilst sitting on the floor messing about with some mad scientist gadgets. They are from the PROVINCES (Wokingham, near Reading). Just about everything about them them screamed NO. Plus Snow Patrol, back when I liked Snow Patrol, but before you like Snow Patrol. Awesome!

Mostly they made me think of Nirvana, in that their songs all seem to be loud bit / quite bit. Top stuff. - 2000 The Pogues @ Brixton Academy (Mon 11 Dec 2000)
Or was it just Shane McGowan? And was it Brixton or the Astoria?. Support from I Am Kloot anyway I wrote about it on popex. Ah, I was not there anyway.
[leave a comment]- They Are Kloot...Valued punter Liz O'Neill has sent in a load of info on I Am Kloot, no doubt hoping to boost their chances of dividends, and it turns out they're playing at a gig I am going to - that's near enough to "news" for me... 9th of December they play at the Victorian Baths in Levenshulme, Manchester, that is as a warm up to their MIGHTY SLOT supporting Shane McGowan and entertaining me and my buddies on the 11th at the Astoria... - 2000 The Wonderstuff @ Forum (Tue 12 Dec 2000)
did I really see them on the 3rd Feb too?
[leave a comment]- The Wonderstuff - Half ofLast night I took a trip back in TIME. Just stepped through the doors and it was the early '90s again. Some people at the Forum last night looked as if they'd been in hibernation since then. Support band Big Yoga Muffin were good, but looked suspiciously like refugees from THAT era... it's only when they played an Eat song, that we realised. More impressive than I ever remember Eat being though. I'd forgotten just what unpleasant places gigs were in those days, everything had been recreated - Pauly
- 2000 Channelfly Xmas Party @ Barfly (Tue 12 Dec 2000)
Before I worked there, I think there were bands. THIS is why I left the Wonderstuff early, doh... There was a ruckus and the police sent us all home.
[leave a comment]- Fly ChristmasI heard a theory that if all the money in the world was distributed equally, we'd all be loaded, but within a year natural forces would ensure that a one third of the people would have somehow conned another third of the people out of theirs. Went to the Channelfly Christmas party at the Monarch yesterday, and that theory was played out with the free drinks. [leave a comment]- Ash @ Elbow RoomsDouble Ash news this week - as well as their "gig" at the Elbow Rooms on Sunday (turns out they're DJing, and Tim Wheeler will be doing a little solo acoustic thing, but HEY, what can you expect for free) they're also doing a special TV recording, that's going out LIVE in Japan. You can't buy tickets for this, but you can win some by listening to XFM. I should warn those of a delicated disposition in advance - it will involve Getting Up Early On Saturday, as it probably starts at about midday. - Pauly

Just got back (well sort of) from Ash's secret-ish gig at the Mean Fiddler (formerly the LA2), that was broadcast live on Japanese TV... Midday on a Saturday, not a very rock and roll time to be doing anything, but sometimes you have to pay the price... and it was well worth paying.
