  • Sex By Seven6x7's gig last night at the Astoria was FAN BLUDDY TASTIC! They use many layers of guitar based noise to create an amazing aural experience. Also they have an ace lights / lazer show, managing to pull it off without coming over all Pink Floyd, Mrs. The support - ...AYWKOBTTOD - seemed to start the gig a lot more neat and orderly than their last show, but a few changarounds and the magical chaos was back.   • King Adora @ the BarflyKing Adora played another of Channelfly's "going to be on the TV soon" gigs yesterday. The music is good, lots of power and energy, but there are tinges of something like Gay Dad about them - they definitely give the impression of being a band put together by journalists and art student prankers, even though this isn't the case. It's nice to see a band making an effort to give rock and roll a kick up the arse, even if they're lifting largely from early Manics / New York Dolls / Guns n Roses s - Admin

  • Badly Dressed Boy @ Camden Bar FlyBadly Drawn Boy last night were absolutely ace - that Damon Gough is funny as you like, a natural entertainer, a talented frontman, and the hairy offspring of Peter Kaye and George Dawes. The set was a fantastic shambles, which is pretty much how I remember it from Glastonbury - is it accident or design? Whatever, it was music as it should be, fun, seemingly effortless.   • Last night I went to an GIGWent to see Starsailor last night at the Barfly, because I have a RULE - if I hear about a new band from three different sources in quick succession, then I check them out. It is a good rule, but not as good as my new rule which is "always carry a screwdriver"; I got to the venue, went to the bog, slammed the cubicle door, and then realised there was no handle, so I couldn't get out...   • The Wonderstuff - Half ofLast night I took a trip back in TIME. Just stepped through the doors and it was the early '90s again. Some people at the Forum last night looked as if they'd been in hibernation since then. Support band Big Yoga Muffin were good, but looked suspiciously like refugees from THAT era... it's only when they played an Eat song, that we realised. More impressive than I ever remember Eat being though. I'd forgotten just what unpleasant places gigs were in those days, everything had been recreated - Pauly

  • Differ'nt StrokesThe Strokes, are five New Yorkers, and they've just sent a CD with a track called Barely Legal (on an EP called The Modern Age, out now on Rough Trade), that's got to be worth a news story, if only for getting this page in the "Billie Piper Naked" search engines...   • Saturday @ The BratsSaturday night's NME / Carling / Brats gig started at the obscenely early our of SIX, with Peaches. Why was I expecting a band? And a Stranglers tribute band at that..? She is a she, and a slightly rude Canadian girl rapper to boot. It was an interesting contrast to the male dominated rock of the rest of the show, but she didn't really reach her audience being on first like that, when people are still queueing to get in... The Strokes played next, and seeing them live, it's easier to appreciat - pauly

  • Ash @ Elbow RoomsDouble Ash news this week - as well as their "gig" at the Elbow Rooms on Sunday (turns out they're DJing, and Tim Wheeler will be doing a little solo acoustic thing, but HEY, what can you expect for free) they're also doing a special TV recording, that's going out LIVE in Japan. You can't buy tickets for this, but you can win some by listening to XFM. I should warn those of a delicated disposition in advance - it will involve Getting Up Early On Saturday, as it probably starts at about midday. - Pauly
  • Oh Yeah, they took the LA2 over...Ash, just how much do they ROCK? Just got back (well sort of) from Ash's secret-ish gig at the Mean Fiddler (formerly the LA2), that was broadcast live on Japanese TV... Midday on a Saturday, not a very rock and roll time to be doing anything, but sometimes you have to pay the price... and it was well worth paying. They started with "Lose Control" from 1977, and did basically a rattle through of most of their singles, with a few new tracks subtly scattered. This is the way to put on a gig in - pauly

  • Cancellations... and a silver lining.Outkast and Kings of Convenience have both pulled out of their upcoming Astoria shows. Kings of Convenience were due to play tonight, with Doves, Ed Harcourt, Elbow and but have been replaced at the last minute by first reserves, THE COOPER TEMPLE CLAUSE... get along early if you're going, this should be GRATE! Also, Outkast have cancelled their show at the Astoria on the 11th of Feb, and also all their Eminem supports (Brussels on the 5th, Paris on the 6th, Manchester on the 8th, and London - Pauly
  • Last minute reprieve...Big thanks to NME (who I won't hear a bad word against) for sorting out last minute access to the Cooper Temple Clause gig last night... For those wondering just how the CTC would cope with the hugest stage of their career so far (when usually the six-piece are crammed into a space smaller than the average garden shed), well, they turned the volume to ELEVEN.   • David Devant play the 100 Club in FebruaryI'm unlikely to make this gig on Thursday 4th February I guess. Takes a lot of planning and notice to get us out of the flat at all, let alone to London. Maybe though, I will check with the wife! Clare's friend's band are the support, so that gives us double reason to try and go, but I am saving up all the favours and time off and so on for another forthcoming (secret) event. If you don't know / love David Devant and his Spirit Wife, you must be mental. Tickets GBP10 in advance from here. -
  • Asylum DVDCustom DVD my arse, it's a DVDR of episodes that have been bittorrented or were videoed off Paramount Comedy at the time... Asylum aired on the Paramount Comedy Channel in 1996. The series stars Simon Pegg, Jessica Stephenson / Hynes (Spaced), Norman Lovett (Red Dwarf) and Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh). The show also features a different guest comedian in each episode including Bill Bailey (Black Books), David Walliams (Little Britain), John Moloney, Paul Tonkinson and Parsons & Naylor -
