- 2001 Phoenix @ Mean Fiddler (Thu 25 Jan 2001)
80s style rock, they did a Cheap Trick cover. Supported by Turin Brakes apparently, I went with Neil and Camilla.
[leave a comment]- Phoenix, tonightPhoenix play tonight at the Mean Fiddler (pah, it were the LA2 in my day), with support from Turin Brakes... Phoenix are ace, just listening to the "United" album now... a lot of it has a soft MOR feel, like Hall and Oates or something, but it's hard to tell if they're being serious or not. One interesting point is how many snippets of other songs you imagine you hear - There's lots of Ben Folds Five, then also Eels (intro to "Summer Days" IS "Susan's House"), Supergrass ("Party Time"), and - Pauly
- 2001 David Devant and his Spirit Wife @ Goldsmiths College (Fri 2 Feb 2001)
A great gig, just round the corner from where I was living. Cheap booze and accompanying art exhibition.
[leave a comment]- Devant, live againDavid Devant and his Spirit Wife are playing live again... my neck of the woods this time, Goldsmith's College, in New Cross, South East London... Got this missive from Vessel: we are playing at goldsmiths college for sure on feb 2 (friday) union building Dixon Rd london se14 prior to this in the same building we have an exhibition exploring the entity that is DD&HSW. please send any evidence pertaining to this to The Vessel 36 Gt Russell St London WC1B 3PP we cannot return stu - pauly
- Devant TonightShort notice, but David Devant appear TONIGHT at Goldsmith's College, New Cross, and it's a lady godiva to get in... Have a SMASHING weekend all, will report back from Devant, Ash, Trail Of Dead and more on Monday... - Pauly
- GRATE gig...Well, Devant were FANTASTIC last night, they played everything that anyone could expect, and they played it with a passion and enthusiasm not witnessed for a while... On the downside, they didn't come on stage until gone half midnight - glad I wasn't one of the many who'd trekked in from out of town... To counter this, four pint jugs of lager in Goldsmith's are only just over a fiver... GET IN! The exhibition was GRATE too - if you were wondering what happened to Vessel's wig, well, you'll - pauly
- 2001 And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead @ Astoria (Sat 3 Feb 2001)
NME Brats show, plus Rocket From The Crypt, Peaches, and The Strokes, yes I did see them...
[leave a comment]- Differ'nt StrokesThe Strokes, are five New Yorkers, and they've just sent a CD with a track called Barely Legal (on an EP called The Modern Age, out now on Rough Trade), that's got to be worth a news story, if only for getting this page in the "Billie Piper Naked" search engines... They're playing one of the NME "Brats" shows, with ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and they're also supporting the 'Dead on tour - the only date confirmed so far is my old home venue Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms, on the - pauly
- Another Strokes showIf you're not going to the NME Carling show on the Saturday night (...Trail Of Dead, Rocket From The Crypt, Peaches, and The Strokes), then there's another chance to see this ace new band - they're playing at the Barfly (Chalk Farm Road) on the 7th of Feb. The Strokes are "very young, and very good looking" according to a record company source - their looks don't really show through when listening to the single though. Hey, look at this: alan-a-tribute-to-elvis.com - THE MAN
- Saturday @ The BratsSaturday night's NME / Carling / Brats gig started at the obscenely early our of SIX, with Peaches. Why was I expecting a band? And a Stranglers tribute band at that..? She is a she, and a slightly rude Canadian girl rapper to boot. It was an interesting contrast to the male dominated rock of the rest of the show, but she didn't really reach her audience being on first like that, when people are still queueing to get in... The Strokes played next, and seeing them live, it's easier to appreciat - pauly
- 2001 Ash @ Mean Fiddler (Sat 3 Feb 2001)
Midday show, Japanese TV recording, news here.
[leave a comment]- Ash @ Elbow RoomsDouble Ash news this week - as well as their "gig" at the Elbow Rooms on Sunday (turns out they're DJing, and Tim Wheeler will be doing a little solo acoustic thing, but HEY, what can you expect for free) they're also doing a special TV recording, that's going out LIVE in Japan. You can't buy tickets for this, but you can win some by listening to XFM. I should warn those of a delicated disposition in advance - it will involve Getting Up Early On Saturday, as it probably starts at about midday. - Pauly
- Oh Yeah, they took the LA2 over...Ash, just how much do they ROCK? Just got back (well sort of) from Ash's secret-ish gig at the Mean Fiddler (formerly the LA2), that was broadcast live on Japanese TV... Midday on a Saturday, not a very rock and roll time to be doing anything, but sometimes you have to pay the price... and it was well worth paying. They started with "Lose Control" from 1977, and did basically a rattle through of most of their singles, with a few new tracks subtly scattered. This is the way to put on a gig in - pauly

[leave a comment] - 2001 Doves @ Astoria (Mon 5 Feb 2001)
Doves, Ed Harcourt, Elbow and Cooper Temple Clause were last minute replacements for Kings of Convenience. NME Brats show.
[leave a comment]- Cancellations... and a silver lining.Outkast and Kings of Convenience have both pulled out of their upcoming Astoria shows. Kings of Convenience were due to play tonight, with Doves, Ed Harcourt, Elbow and but have been replaced at the last minute by first reserves, THE COOPER TEMPLE CLAUSE... get along early if you're going, this should be GRATE! Also, Outkast have cancelled their show at the Astoria on the 11th of Feb, and also all their Eminem supports (Brussels on the 5th, Paris on the 6th, Manchester on the 8th, and London - Pauly
- Last minute reprieve...Big thanks to NME (who I won't hear a bad word against) for sorting out last minute access to the Cooper Temple Clause gig last night... For those wondering just how the CTC would cope with the hugest stage of their career so far (when usually the six-piece are crammed into a space smaller than the average garden shed), well, they turned the volume to ELEVEN. It was like being speared through the heart and the brain with some kind of sonic death lance last night at the Astoria. Still the fel - Pauly
- 2001 My Vitriol @ ULU (Thu 1 Mar 2001)
Why was I at this? Aha, Channelfly had just bought me...
[leave a comment]- A taster of who Channelfly areI've found some streaming video that will give you all a bit of a taster of just who Channelfly are, and what they do... This is a program they've put together, and it features some live tunes from My Vitriol for starters, and RAH! I'm going to see them tonight... There's also some live JJ72, Feeder, Emiliana Torrini, Reef and also The Webb Brothers. And HEY! It's free, I'm not going to start squeezing you for cash just yet... - 2001 Grand Theft Auto @ The Vibe Bar (Wed 7 Mar 2001)
nothing to do with the game, or the ex 3 Colours Red band of this name, was some popexers, at an event called Peep Show. No not that Peep Show either.
[leave a comment]- Art Thing TonightTonight there is an art happening, of the kind East London does so well... It's called "Peep Show", and it's going to feature an GIG by valued punters and enemies of the man Grand Theft Auto. No, not the band with Chris McCormack in, surely you have the hang of this by now... It's tonight, at the Vibe Bar, 91-95 Brick Lane, from 8 until 11.30... - Pauly

Reni out of the Stone Roses and his band... was looking forward to this a lot, but it was absolutely shocking.
[leave a comment]- Who's going to see Reni's new band then?Alan "Reni" Wren, formerly of The Stone Roses (you knew that, right?) is touring next month with his new band "The Rub", according to NME: http://www.nme.com/NME/External/News/News_Story/0,1004,18306,00.html Will it be good, or crap? Either way, I got my tickets... - pauly
- So what gig YOU at tonight? So what you doing tonight? I'm at Toploader... HAAAAA! No, I'm going to see The Rub tonight, in Camden, that is Reni out of the Stone Roses and his new band... If you can't get into that, the FIGHTING COCKS are playing a the Red-Eye (Islington), and The Mighty Handful are playing at Sound in Leicester Square! This is an unsigned band showcase, you can get a flyer from their website if you're thinking of heading to the centre of that London tonight. Also Ash are playing at the ICA, The Blockh - Pauly
- More Monkey businessRead about it here at guardian.co.uk, rather than on The Mirror where they got it from... It makes sense, but it's probably nonsense. If it is true, I hope they don't play the O2. Madchester Reunited though, that is a good headline. I think they came up with the headline first and made up the story around it... I only saw the Stone Roses once, at Reading, without John Squire. Tsk, like seeing Take That without Robbie Williams*. I have seen all of the band in their various solo and other coll -

- I would go out tonight...Ah sod it, I WILL go out tonight... just got my eleventh hour confirmation of a Cooper Temple Clause @ The 100 Club ticket for tonight, and that makes me a happy man... The debut single is out (though all sold out in a few hours), and there is a real buzz surrounding this Reading Sextet. If it wasn't for this, my pick of the night would be Kathryn Williams at the Union Chapel... everyone seems to have gone a bit quiet since her Mercury near miss, but if you've not seen her, check her out. - Live reviewThe Cooper Temple Clause at the 100 Club were very large indeed last night... it was hot, and also nice and crowded, though not absolutely packed out. I have a new favourite tune, but after a few lagers (last night, not this morning) I can't remember what it's called... Other bloke, not Ben, sang one of the songs, which I'm not sure I remember from previous gigs. Support was odd, very good, but didn't fit that gig - it was one man, his guitar, and a harmonica, so a bit Bob Dylan, and a lo - pauly

First time I saw them, at Uncle Bob's Wedding Reception.
[leave a comment]- Not much Darkness history before 2003 on their wikipedia pageYeah I am making my own music industry conspiracy theory, having been drawn in by that BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT and the RONAN PARKE CONNECTION post that has been doing the rounds (thought that might all be bobbins. The Darkness wikipedia page seems to be saying they were first spotted by anyone in 2002, surely they were bigged up on popex before that, and so most likely popbitch too? I first saw them in 2001, and though I didn't add them to popex after that first gig, it must have been that year. -

[leave a comment]- Devant live again!Vessel and The Professor from David Devant and his Spirit Wife will be doing a low key acoustic show to unveil new Devant tracks at Uncle Bob's Wedding Reception on August 4th. Fingers crossed for some old faves too. Uncle Bob's is at the Water Rats Theatre, Grays Inn Road, King's Cross on the first Saturday of every month. That means there's one on the 7th of July too, but not with an popEx listed artist playing, it will be The Darkness instead. - pauly
