[leave a comment] - 2003 The Darkness @ Astoria (Sat 5 Apr 2003)
Was this the Carling "Homecoming" type event?
[leave a comment]- The day of the gigXFM might still be giving away tickets for the Darkness Carling Homecoming today, listen online at xfm.co.uk... -
- Darkness reviewread my review of The Darkness Carling Homecoming here... very good. -
- Don't Let The Bells EndLet's set aside for a moment that any sort of "homecoming" for The Darkness should certainly be at The Barfly in London's very own Camden Town, as it's where they did their first half a dozen or so proper gigs. Last night's show at The Astoria was a triumph. Three costume changes for Justin, an impromptu walkabout in the crowd, spectacular pyrotechnics, a storm of glitter, autumn leaves, and shock of shocks SOME NEW MATERIAL! The long awaited Christmas Single was garnished with a choir of tiny c -
- Do you remember this one Dom?Think this is the gig I mean: The Darkness live at The Astoria. I'm spending the evening looking for old gig footage. This one is not so old (1993?) but is a classic, definitely a highlight of the gigography. Reminiscing to myself about the gig now so am going to write it up now as I recall it, apologies in advance for inaccuracies and inconsistencies. If you are reading this in the authorised biography after I am dead then please feel free to ask for a refund. Rarely for a gig I am post -

[leave a comment]- Viva Las VegasI have been in that Las Vegas, nice place, shame about the food, for me anyway. Had a nice grilled vege sub from Quizno's on the way home, but apart from that it's not the best place for a vegan. Breakfast was fried potato and spicy tomato sauce, more than I'd eat at home, but not a lot considering the choice available to everyone else. Not many of the restaurants made any concession at all to vegetarians on their menu, so no hope for me. On place that did was Olives in the Bellagio hotel. But i - pauly

- 2003 Duran Duran @ Forum (Mon 13 Oct 2003)
Celeb-tastic, we were sat just a couple of rows behind Stephen Fry.
Not sure if this was the 14th or the 13 though...
[leave a comment]- Duran Duran @ Kentish Town ForumGig last night was ace, though Duran Duran themselves didn't put on too much of a performance, at least to start with, they were happy with standing there knowing the crowd were loving them. The atmosphere in the venue was great, and best of all it was stalking-TASTIC! We were stood right by Stephen Fry, and also Mark Owen, who for some reason was dressed like Tom Baker's Doctor Who, with a big hat and scarf. Also spotted Gabrielle, Toby Anstis, and Phil's bird Kate from 'Stenders. Apparently Vi - pauly
- 2003 AC/DC @ Hammersmith Odeon (Tue 21 Oct 2003)
Special gig, we had to queue all day for tickets. Support from Hundred Reasons.
[leave a comment]- NNNNNNNN \m/AC/DC play Hammersmith Odeon! Normally you'd get acdc... but not this time. -
- Up early to get those AC/DC ticketsC'mon... Good weekend though, started slightly fuzzy with booze, then met the parents for a curry at the Punjab in Covent Garden, then saw David Blaine in his box, he really does seem to be there, I don't get what the trick is still. Is David Blaine cheating? Then a mooch round Borough Market, got some New Forest cider, then an equally fantastic curry in the Anglo Asian, then a mooch round Spitalfields Market, a very productive weekend, hope the week can be as good... already have lined up Chi - pauly
- Keep smoking JustinStill no confirmation as to whether tonight's Darkness gig is still on or not (after Liverpool, Folkestone and Portsmouth were all postponed), but I could do with it being put off for a bit... Saw AC/DC last night, also at Hammersmith Odeon Apollo, and I'm not sure there's enough room in one week for that much ROCK. Rumours about the venue now being a higher capacity than Brixton Academy are very hard to believe, it certainly feels smaller. The sloping of the floor is the same, if not steeper, -

The Darkness on the turn I would say, possibly the last good gig...
[leave a comment]- Darkness Cancelled! There's a rumour going around that tonigh's show at Leas Cliff Hall might be off, because Justin Hawkins has lost his voice... Call the venue to check if you're travelling a long way! I'm still looking for a ticket for it, or the rescheduled show... - pauly
- 2003 Bruce Forsyth @ Theatre Royal Haymarket (Sun 26 Oct 2003)
Charity comedy thing, cool as, lots of names present, including Ian McKellen. Search the blog, I must have written this one up...
[leave a comment]- Comedy Tonight TooCharity show at the Theatre Royal Haymarket... decided not to go for the gala buffet tickets, even though Clare's fave Ian McKellan MIGHT be there... there couldn't offer any guarantees on the phone, so it could easily just have been a Sunday night in a room full of very old people. Ross Noble really stands out on that bill, he's the youngest performer there by about forty years. That was written BEFORE the show, now the after... great night, Ross Noble was the best by far, mostly because the -

- 2003 Suede @ Astoria (Sat 13 Dec 2003)
Last gig ever! Played some great sets, the gig seemingly got chopped short, we left to the ghostly strains of "We'll Meet Again"... I hope we do.
[leave a comment]- SuedeSuede play London, 12th of December, bit steep though... do I do nothing but complain about costs? Am I mean? At least it's a proper gig that we have a chance of getting tickets to, after the fiasco that was the ICA. Tickets, concert tickets, gig tickets, more ticket info to go here Popex has been down at the weekend, the box hasn't been right since it was moved - a new logging process seems to have been started, I deleted the file and there was some unattached data filling up the hard disk. - pauly
- Suede @ London AstoriaMan I'm spending too much on gigs, but it's turning into a really good year for good bands touring... Just got Suede tickets, it's good that they've added a new date at a smaller venue... Also GOOD that it's a Saturday night, we can really make a day of it, but not so good that it's the Astoria on a Saturday, the gig will end at about 10pm so they can start clearing everyone out to get a club night in there... plus Kings Of Leon who were OK, Travis a bit boring. VERY annoyed by the Carling-ness of it all and so we left early to get a proper drink.
[leave a comment] - 2003 Damon Albarn @ Neighbourhood (Mon 22 Dec 2003)
Democrazy, bit worthy really, and not that thrilling, but nice to be somehwere trendy for a change...
[leave a comment]- Damon AlbarnBit indulgent last night I thought, and not all that impressive, but nice enough. Neighbourhood is a good venue though, shame it's so far away. It's VERY West London, I'm not sure I've been to another gig where we've bought bottles of wine over the bar. Turns out there are loads of pubs called The Crown (or some variation) near Tottenham Court Road, and we were all waiting for each other in different ones. Still enjoying the Gonga album. - pauly

- Weekend reportSuper weekend, starting with The Mighty Boosh at the LCH, funny, good, we felt a bit old though, they do attract a young audience, lots of whom were dressed up. I maybe enjoyed the show a bit more than my companions, though it did feel a bit like a cobbled together string of all the funny characters from the show. It felt like that because it was that, like the TV show and the radio show before it. A few drinks after this in The Clifton, and then home to our massive telly - sorry no pictures of -
