Just did my first mains electrics today!
Just did my first mains electrics today! OK it was only removing a broken light fitting (yes of course it was me that broke it), but it involved actual screwdriver against 240v mains cableage. Turned the power off to do it, had to really as the only screwdriver the right size that I had was the leatherman I got as a gift for being Andy's best man. All metal, no insulation, HARDCORE!
BACK from IKEA, in one piece, only light arguing. Bought soft furnishings as planned and a few bits and pieces unplanned, of course. Total bill £150, could have been a lot worse.
Out to Escondido tonight, should be good. Mexican though, we're sure to be the only people in there...

We're off to IKEA, so in case it ends in a death SEEYA!
It's a lovely sunny bank holiday, so it would be foolish for me to stay inside all day on the computer. So we're off out! To a HUGE inside with no daylight in at all! Yes IKEA, North of the river and everything! IKEA traditionally leads to arguments, so I'll say goodbye now in case we end up killing each other.
Only going to look at duvet covers really. We have loads, but we don't like any of them, the only one that has lasted well and that we like came from IKEA originally we think, so we're off for a look. I say that's all we're going for, and I swore to people at work on discussing this that we wouldn't impulse buy anything. HOWEVER, as if it were some sort of sign, the day we decided to go the power supply in our lamp in our lounge went POP! So we need a new lamp. Coincidentally (or even more of a sign) that lamp came from IKEA, an impulse buy when I moved into Clare's flat in Stokey all those years ago... We have a bit more of a list now too, maybe some more coathangers, maybe an ironing basket. Yeah real exciting stuff!
If anyone wants anything, text me, you've got about an hour...

It's just the battery I think, it won't keep a charge now...
OK not everyone is building a clock out of voltmeters but the people who are trying to do this sort of thing have got to feel happy about it, I know I would if I could get more stuff for free. Modern cars are almost impossible to do anything to, but if you had a VW Beetle or a Landrover or something you could learn to fix it yourself.
There are a lot more bits of kit out there now that you can open up and do things to, and even if they're not officially "open" then on sites like makezine.com and hackaday.com you can find out how to hack stuff that you already have, or can get for free. It doesn't have to be just electronic / electrical stuff either, did you see IKEA hacks that I posted recently?
Not sure my reply tags work at all anyway, but in that case it was because I put [replay] instead of reply...
My lego skills are a bit behind, but I'm going to build on them, then do some diy electronics and things. Definitely. Not just daydream about it, oh no.
