They might be porpoises actually, but there's a family of three aquatic mammals playing happily in the sea just by The Ship in Sandgate, get down there and have a look.

hi
I have just discovered Folkestone and Dolphins in Sandgate.
I have seen them on three occasions over the past four weeks, however recently they appear to be becoming more elusive! Was it something I said ?
Anyway not really sure not what else to say.
Bye Estelle

Well done Estelle. They are about but are elusive so to see them 3 times is pretty darn good! Glad you've discovered Folkestone too..

hi guess what I have seen 'Dave'the dolpin again, yesterday I actually swam out and it circled me and my friend it was about a metre away from me. It is a dream come true. Any chance for any extra information on either exactly what type of dolphin it is and are there any clubs you can join so that I could swim with them more officially

Ive seen the dolphin/s on several occasions/visits to sandgate,but yesterday was amazing!i was swimming out to one of the yellow bouys,there were two canoes around,when suddenly a huge dolphin(dave?)came toward me,blew out air and swam all around me,he touched me,once!,then swam away after awhile.I found it quite scary,but SO exhilerating!im sure i'll be boring friends and family for a while by telling the story over and over!!!But it certainly made my day!(is Dave the right name for such a beautiful & glorius beast tho?? just a thought)

I think the way the dolphin is being treated is absolutely disgraceful!!!! People have no consideration for the dolphin and are purely out for self gain to say “they swam with a dolphin!” I think it’s so selfish! The fate for solitary dolphins is always a bleak one, and the reason for this is down to humans! No-one fully knows why some dolphins appear on their own, but it is certain that if people continue as they are doing Dave will become reliant on people for interaction and social stimulation! The more this happens the harder it is for the dolphin to fend for itself, also people may go too far and start to feed it and one day he will trust the wrong person, or get hit by a propeller of a boat and that will be the end of such a beautiful creature!
I walked along to where Dave was today and I was ashamed to be human. There was about 300-500 people all crowded on the waters edge all watching him and every time he came up everyone screamed and ran to the waters edge like he was some sort of amusement thing! People were getting in the water and he was coming up to them, i watched from a distance and walked away coz it upset me too much. If it carries on he will die, and it will be everybody’s fault that has gone near him and encouraged him! i think its such a privilege to have a dolphin on our coast and I understand people want to see him, as I do, but why do people have to act in such a selfish and irresponsible manner!? Why do they have to spoil it? People have forgotten he is a wild animal and he needs respect!!

Hopefully he'll be back again in early summer. Look out though, I'm sure I heard that the same warming conditions that are attracting dolphins might attract GREAT WHITE SHARKS to our coasts! Well, it could happen. Possibly.

There was a mention in the Folkestone Herald letters page this week, and a picture in the Mirror...

I'm sure I heard he's a bottlenose dolphin, now you and he are such close chums you should probably get the t-shirt... I swam with dolphins in Florida, at a conservation centre, they told us there not to approach them in the wild, but this one does seem friendly. I don't think they're common enough over here for their to be clubs organising swims with them. Head to Florida!

Its good to see the dolphins back in our area, I can recall back in the early 1950`s they were quite a commnon site off the beaches of Herne bay.but unfortunately as the area grew in popularity and more boats took to the sea they disappeared.

Have you seen the Dolphins in (well, off) Folkestone or Sandgate recently?
pauly :: 10 Sep :: 2006 :: Comment / reply
Nice sighting. There was a dolphin lurking off of the harbour a couple of weeks ago. BTW, I have seen a family party of dolphins at Dungey a while ago, so they are around our area.

Over to you, discussion about anything local, but please be considerate... Folkestone on TV, Kent gigs, Find a flatmate, rent a room, property queries, current news, what's new, local events, for sale, local services, what I like about Folkestone, ask questions, offer advice, plug yourself... the more it's used the more useful a resource it will become. If you want a gig listed click here to add it (fixed now!), or just click here to post a message...
