Ride, Verve, Mercury Rev, and The Manics in Folkestone

Hmm, bit more gig history confusion... This Ride gigography says Ride played Folkestone on the 21st March, 1992. Now I look into that properly, it says support came from Mercury Rev (and not Verve, which I got from somewhere). This full Ride gigography backs it up, so does this Mercury Rev gigography, and they all confirm that the bands were elsewhere on Sunday March 22nd and Sunday March 29th.

Mostly just thinking out loud here, and making notes for next time I can't remember where the info on the site came from, excuse me.

SO, the Manic Street Preachers date in Folkestone is still a mystery! Also where did I get the idea that Verve supported? Off on another quest...

RE: Ride, Verve, Mercury Rev, and The Manics in Folkestone

I saw Ride in Folkestone in 1992, I believe at the Leas, used to have the ticket stub for date but cant help with that.

I also attended the Manics gig in folkestone at the venue that used to be the converted cinema. They had to reschedule the gig as James had a throat infection at last minute, leaving a tonne of Manics fans wandering round Folkestone. The gig was hastily rearranged shortly afterwards but only about 60 people attended as it was short notice and badly advertised.......But was the Manics at their best, did a fantastic gig despite the lack of numbers.

Thanks for that, think it's the Metronome you mean

Have you seen it recently? It's derelict, but been bought by the NHS I think.

Still got no idea of the date of that Manics gig, but at least this sounds like a confirmation that it really did happen!

RE: Thanks for that, think it's the Metronome you mean

Yip was the Metronome, forgot its name as it was a very short lived venue, pity had a nice atmosphere. But though intoxicated at the time I can definatley state the gig did happen.
It was just as Generation Terrorists was climbing the charts.

now all we need is the date...

did you see any other bands there? I've heard of a few others playing there, it was on the indie circuit, but no-one's sure of actual dates. Suede played there, that's one I do have a date for, as it's in their biography Love and Poison. I hear Faith No More played there, and PJ Harvey too.

RE: now all we need is the date...

sorry to come to this really late...but the Metronome was a great venue...and indeed, i can confirm i saw the following bands there...
cardiacs/levitation
kingmaker (supported by Suede in the week The Drowners was released)
manics (don't remember it being poorly attended, but it was rescheduled and was final date on their tour around generation terrorists...and you could quite clearly see richey's razor blade scars from his 4 Real incident
PJ Harvey (before she started applying make-up
Kitchens of Distinction
went to loads more...but can't remember them

Also, i saw the Ride /Mercury Rev Leas Cliff Hall show...i know the London date a little later had the Verve as support. Mercury Rev were very rocky and a bit shite ...amazed they turned out so good in the end!

Thanks for this Chris, love this gig history

Got all of these gigs in the Metronome history page, don't suppose you have the actual dates of any of those do you?

RE: now all we need is the date...

Nope, Manics were the only gig I saw there. Rest where all at Canterbury Uni, the Leas and Maidstone. Saw The Chords reunion/final gig at Maidstone working mans club, total 70's retro right down to the big fight at the end, no rockers to fight so the Mods just fought each other......lol

Thanks for chipping in on the site anyway

Not been to many gigs in this area myself, only The Darkness and Dirty Pretty Things I think, few more in Tunbridge Wells back in the day and squillions in London and Hampshire.

RE: Thanks for chipping in on the site anyway

Sorry to jump in but I'm seeing some valuable input here. You're all clearly live music fans so could I ask you all who would be your top 5 live bands to see. It would be most helpful if they are current and still performing and preferably the kind of bands who would come to Folkestone (by that I mean not those that sell out enormous venues!).
There is a reason for my interest and I will reveal all shortly.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Quarterhouse music theatre venue creative quarter creative foundation comedy bar food music gig concert folkestone quarter house creative quarter quarterhouse

Who I would like to come to Folkestone (again in some cases):

The Cure (ha!)

The Magic Numbers

Super Furry Animals

David Devant and his Spirit Wife

Belle and Sebastian

Suede (maybe they'll get back together soon)

This is not for Zoo Thousand / ZOO9 is it? Think it might be an effort to get people to trust that again. Guessing it's for the Quarter House, the new theatre on Tontine Street, am I right? If you get a good band to play the opening night, I want in.

Over to you, discussion about anything local, but please be considerate... Folkestone on TV, Kent gigs, Find a flatmate, rent a room, property queries, current news, what's new, local events, for sale, local services, what I like about Folkestone, ask questions, offer advice, plug yourself... the more it's used the more useful a resource it will become. If you want a gig listed click here to add it (fixed now!), or just click here to post a message...
