Wear Bay Dock

Does anyone know what the dock/landing stage at Wear Bay was used for and when was it built? Somebody told me it was built as a troop embarcation dock in WW1. Looks older to me. Also, what are the remains of the builing and chimney(?) and what look like railway tracks(visable at low tide) at Copt point?

Can you find it on this satellite picture? Double click to centre it, then right click on "link to this page", copy the link / shortcut and paste it back here...

I found a bit more about the history of my place in this weekend, more people are saying it was a school that was converted into flats in the 1950's... the top floor of the building seems to have been added / expanded into in the 1940's though. There's a whole lot of buildings of historic interest around our way! Do you know anything about The Clifton Hotel? I don't think it got a mention in .

Heres a Multimap link. The aforementioned dock runs from beneath the Martello along to below Capel. The remains of the buiding can be seen from the harbour though they're not easy to get to as there are signs warning of cliff erosion.www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=624000.693068221&Y=137000.984371294&width=500&height=300&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=10000&out.x=10&out.y=7

In answer to your question, the 'dock' below the cliffs at East Wear Bay is actually a sea defence scheme put in place by British Rail between 1947 and 1952ish this also acts as a 'toe weight' to hold the cliffs back from landslipping.
