Just found this old email, from when we found out who Charles Valentine Clarke was:
This evening I have been working on the graves databases. This is something
that I have wanted to do for some time. Remember - I have not yet located
the graves and am not sure that I will. But what I have to tell you is most
interesting, and has only come to light because of all the work that I have
been doing for the property register.
In the church we have a brass memorial plaque to a Charles Valentine Clarke.
He was "lost in the foundering of the Titanic" and it was placed there by
his wife. To make a boring register more interesting, I looked up on the
website (with a friend because I'm not into this) all the information
referring to Charles Valentine Clarke. I will put as an attachment what I have
written concerning the couple.
As his name did not appear on the "recovered bodies" list, I assumed that
his body had not been recovered. But on the list of graves that I copied
(drawn up about 1970) is a Charles Valentine died 1912, and buried in the
same grave as Harry (died 1951 and Jane I had put him down as Charles Valentine - because that was how it was recorded hence he did not appear on
my original information to you. At some point I will need to look this up
in the burial register at Portsmouth City Records.
The attachment is a copy that I have put opposite the photograph of the
plaque. I do not have a scanner so cannot send an image of the plaque. The
wording on the plaque is In loving memory of my dear husband Charles V
Clarke who was lost in the foundering of the Titanic April 15th 1912 Aged
29 years. "In the midst of life we are in death".

Over to you, discussion about anything local, but please be considerate... Folkestone on TV, Kent gigs, Find a flatmate, rent a room, property queries, current news, what's new, local events, for sale, local services, what I like about Folkestone, ask questions, offer advice, plug yourself... the more it's used the more useful a resource it will become. If you want a gig listed click here to add it (fixed now!), or just click here to post a message...
