RE: wg111 (wifi) + ubuntu (linux) still not playing nicely

Hi Paul
I came across this site as I was searching how to make my new WG111v3 usb adaptor work under mandriva 2008 (I'll try it on my ubuntu machine later) - that has ndiswrapper installed and, like yours, didn't work. Your posting gave me the clue as to where to look (as well as reading the ndiswrapper manpage), so if you, or anyone else is still having problems, this is how it is done.

The wg111v3 comes with a setup.exe file, rather than the raw inf and other files, so the trick is to extract the files that you need from it. I have wine installed so I simply ran it under wine and went back to harvest the necessary files - you might also use an extraction tool such as filejuicer to get at them, or even use setup on a windows machine!

You need
WG111v3.inf which is in .wine/c/windows/inf/
wg111v3.sys which is in .wine/c/windows/system32
I also included
wg111v3.cat which is in .wine/c/windows/inf/WG111v3/Vista64
but I don't know if you actually need it

the .wine file is usually in your home folder, c may also be called drive_c or fake_windows

Copy these files to a folder somewhere and use them to configure the ndiswrapper. The mandriva wireless configuration tool in the control centre worked fine after that (when I remembered to actually plug in the adaptor) and automatically installed the extra files needed for wpa encryption; I am sure the ubuntu tools will work equally well.

I didn't know about this. 90 second limit for your videos though, usually that's enough for funny little bits I've shot myself that I might want to share, like the nieces on their new bikes or Pauline's kitten, I will give this a try later.

HAZZARD Genealogy

Dear Pauly:

Has anyone that has posted or who reads this blog ever heard of a man called "Rhodes Hazzard"? He is my GGG-grandfather who was b. 11 Oct. 1806, he turns up in Sussex County, Delaware (U.S.A.) (ref. "The History of Delaware" J. Thomas Scharf) and in the book, there is no reference to Rhodes' parents. His son, Thomas Hazzard told a census worker that Rhodes was from Scotland.
I am just wondering if during some research anybody has encountered that name.

Everyone hates the new design. It's not my design, it's not really anyone's any more, bits have been chopped and changed so much, this has been years in the making. The bigger changes are back end, but even they're not that big. I must do something with their rss feed, add some more feeds and things. It might be best to just chuck them out there, see what people do with them, and then steal the best ideas for the site! I need to do some funky things like they did with digg.com, popbitch was never so different from that really.

Queen BACK!

We're not going to this, nor going to get the album I wouldn't have thought. Went to see "Queen" before with Paul Rodgers, and it was good to hear some of the tunes live, but it's probably best just to leave it. Also Brian May seems like a bit of a miserable git to me, from reading his blog and meeting him once. John Deacon had the best idea, he had nothing to do with the show that we went to, last thing I think he was involved in was the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.

The band have also announced a Queen and Paul Rodgers 14-nation European tour, starting in September.

It will include UK dates in Nottingham, Glasgow, London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Liverpool.

They will also play in Russia, Poland, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, Hungary, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Austria.

Guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and Rodgers wrote the new album in late 2007 and early this year. It will be released on 1 September.

Bassist John Deacon, who retired from the music business in the late 1990s, will not take part in the tour.

Gerald - 'tis Geordie George if U R da right guy...we used 2 jam @ my house in Cheriton and urs too - with a beer an a smoke! I also had young Paul as a learner...haha, my son Daniels' friend from school to ...erm...teach! 16 yrs on - and my boys (men now!) have managed to contact young - at the time - PAUL MINTER. This was done thru Facebook I hear, and Paul asked my Gary 'How's ya dad' or summit... it has been alleged that Paul now has a recording studio in Wales - where the beer is good & cheep!

Is this the very same Paul Minter from Cheriton (lived with mam & dad behind the big pub near Cheriton High St but on left on way to town). He should be aged about 29 - 30 yrs now, bless him, he's really getting on now!

Let me know as I would enjoy a riff or two someday - he could probably show me how an AXE works!

I am currently searching for 4 Sr Perl developers to work on their CMS. The backend is Linux and MySql.

My recommended events

Cool, just discovered my recommended events at last.fm, and I see loads of bands that I like or liked in the past are playing live about now, including bands that I didn't really know were still going, including Love / Hate, Sheep on Drugs, Ricky Spontane and Sultans of Ping. Great. I'm not entirely sure how it knows that I'd like those gigs, it must be based on number of plays and things, iTunes updates last.fm with what I've been listening to, check out what I just listened to...

Off to The Famous Ship Inn in a bit, just waiting for Emma to turn up. I'm glad it's there and not Hythe, mostly for ease of getting home again, but also the beers are great there.

Jaiku's joining Google

I forget the point of Jaiku, it was one of those Web2.0 startups that did the social networking thing, a bit Facebook, a lot Twitter (but better), for updating people who don't care with exactly what you're up to minute by minute... they were the first one I saw that let you do it all automatically, wihtout ever having to return to the site, so while I've not been back to jaiku.com since I first signed up (oh yeah, I signed up anyway) my page there is fully up to date with every blog post, every track I've listened to, and every gig in Folkestone that I've listed on FG without actually going to or knowing much about. Here's Jaiku's announcement:

Why is MJ Hibbett not showing up on my "blogroll"?

I've been using social bookmarking site del.icio.us to handle my links to other sites forever, getting (for example) a feed of my links tagged "blogs" and then filtering out just links I've given a rating too. I've saved MJ Hibbett so why's it not showing up in my blogs links feed? Have I hit some kind of limit? Do I need to demote more people? Anyone know?

del.icio.us is great, I don't know many people who use it on a day to day basis though.

Ah, does look like I've hit a limit, see my actual list of blogs, mjhibbett.net appears one below nicpillinger.com who is in the RSS list. Just wondered if you had any, not to worry. Pubs, clubs, restaurants, anything. We probably have enough already. I've had a look at www.list.co.uk but I don't see any gigs that I would cross the street for on the days we're there. I'm saving Edinburgh recommendations people give me here.

These Print Competitions have ended our 2006/2007 season, with only our Annual Dinner and Awards Night to follow on 25th May.

We are certainly doing well � within the club we now have, among our members, A.R.P.S., L.R.P.S., C.P.A.G.B., and D.P.A.G.B. award and competition winners of acceptances and prizes, we are without a doubt among the top clubs in Kent now, not only for our members personal achievements but also as a club. We have won several Battles this season, including, the Eurotunnel Trophy against Deal, Gateway (Dover), and Canterbury, (where we tied with Gateway (Dover)), and at the Battle at Malling we tied 2nd with 10 clubs entering.

If you have ever come along to our club and, perhaps been disappointed with that particular evenings presentation, do please come along and �try us again�. We now have approximately 70 members and our club is very strong, as you can see from above. Unfortunately some potential new members come along and that actual evening may not be their �cup-of-tea� so they don�t come again, which is a shame as we have so much to offer anyone who is interested in photography. Our programme covers many aspects of photography and we try to suit everyones taste and ability Our motto is �We don�t Teach, But You Learn�. Our new season will commence on 3rd September, and the Programme will be on our website for viewing from August.
