Not satisfied with simply hosting the biggest names from the worlds’ of rock and extreme sports, Download, on the 5 and 6 June, will also be the place to go to see some of the hottest up-and-coming rock bands of the moment, as it announces its third and final stage. 11 rapidly-rising stars have been confirmed to appear on the Barfly stage over the course of the weekend at Donington, some of which are fresh from making waves at this year’s South By South West festival.
First up in the new bands bonanza is Austin-based Young Heart Attack who "sound like MC5 having a party with the Shangri-Las at Angus Young’s house". Call it metal, call it heavy rock, or just good old rock n’ roll, Young Heart Attack have it running through their veins 24/7.
Signed to Poptones, The Glitterati represent the antithesis of all that is wrong with current UK rock n’ roll. A blistering, three-dimensional mind-melt of frantic sex-inducing sound, dazzling good looks and moral code-defying anarchic spirit, The Glitterati are on a mission to put the sleaze back in to rock.
Surferosa will be bringing their unique blend of thrashed up synth-punk to Donington Park. Extensive touring throughout Norway and Scandinavia with the likes of Turbonegro among others has projected them into the UK music press and debut album Shanghai My Heart is due out in this month.
London-based Ikara Colt will hit the Barfly stage fresh off an extensive tour support with Amen. Enjoying interest from the UK rock scene with their unique Sonic Youth-esque stained, art-rock flavours their forthcoming album "Modern Apprentice" will be released on the 7 June 2004 on Fantastic Plastic.
Hailing from the "Motor City", Michigan-based Dirty American’s are purveyors of straight-up, vintage rock. With their riffs from Detroit and soul from Motown, their debut album "Strange Generation" was released on Roadrunner Records.
Norse turbo-rock n’ roll commandos Span have attracted massive media attention since they hit the UK scene in 2002. With comparisons ranging from Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses through to Jane’s Addiction and ZZ Top, debut album "Mass Distraction" was released through Island Records.
Completing the line are The Holiday Plan, Fire Apple Red, Danko Jones, Your Code Name Is: Milo and last but by no means least Do Me Bad Things, who each represent the cutting edge of new music from across the International rock scene. All hotly tipped and with highly anticipated releases expected in 2004, these bands are not to be missed at the UK’s biggest rock festival.
The main stage has Linkin Park, Metallica, Sum 41, Korn, Iggy and the Stooges, Slipknot, The Hives, Slayer, Distillers, Machine Head, Cradle of Filth, Ill Nino, and Monster Magnet and the Game On Stage sees Electric Six, Him, Soil, Bowling For Soup, Akercocke, Taking Back Sunday, Dillinger Escape Plan, Damage Plan, Million Dead, Brides of Destruction, Life of Agony, and Hatebreed

Pleased to report that the band were ace last night, and so is the venue. Can't believe we've not been to The Eye before, I suppose because it doesn't look like it'll be much from the outside, but inside there's a huge doglegged space with a couple of bars, pool table, table football, stage area, sofas, everything... no real ales on though.
The Action Plan are good, younger viewers will draw comparisons to early Manic Street Preachers and Muse, the Dads standing at the back (man was that how I felt) will pick up some Wedding Present in Niall's guitar and occasionally some Ian McCulloch in his voice. Definitely seeing them again. They're local so maybe it will be at The Eye again.
Clear some space for their amphetamine-epileptic off stage excursions.
Caught up with the flatmate who had stopped to assist some fellow who was possibly having a heart attack, on the way to the venue. We were on the way to the venue, not the chap with the dicky ticker. At first I thought he was making an improper suggestion from his prone position, but no, he was trying to say he had acute angina. Luckily there was a first aider also passing, and an ambulance arrived soon enough. Also saw one of the bendy busses wedged into Stoke Newington High Street on the way home. They're too big man.
Grand Designs Abroad on tonight, "The Lot, France". Thanks www.bleb.org/tv/.
